Sign writing London wine store in Marylebone, West London by Traditional Signs of London. This was a project the clients requested their branding & colour palette, produced by a graphic designer be used & implimented on their store front, which was having a re-fresh & re-vamp. They had artwork already designed, so required a sign writer who could impliment their branding without alteration. Their old branding was a chunky typeface in white on a deep purple fascade. The re-designed look was to be the purple & gold writing on a shade of pale grey. The look is far smarter & is used throughout their branding on the website, advertising & merchandise. It just looks far more contemporary & high end.

The artwork is sized to the required dimentions & printed/drawn onto paper in studio. The artwork is then taken to site & reliefed onto the fascia by means of a ‘pounce’ using charcoal powder. Its like tracing the image, but this is a faster process for working on site, but more work in preparing in studio. Efforts are made to ensure the artwork is placed level & centred to the fascia, or placed as required by the clients if they require the postioning slightly lower than centre etc.

The whole of the artwork is reliefed onto the fascia, both brand name & sub heading. It was considered due to the time frame of this work (winter project, less daylight, poor weather) that the gold be applied first. The writing for this required precision & skill to create sign writing as sharp & neat as possible. This is done with a mix of paint & ‘size’ (gilding glue for gold leaf). The writing is painted letter by letter, not with a stencil. The gold is then applied to the ‘size’ covered letters by pressing the gold & allowing it to stick & dry to where has been brush painted.

The 23ct genuine gold is then allowed to dry & cure before the excess gold is ‘burnished’ off using a damp cloth or soft specialist brush. Sign writing London shop fronts sees a lot of gold leaf gilding produced by sign writers. Clients expect the best & there is no better than genuine gold on your store front.

The remainder of the signage is hand painted letter by letter in the matched colour paint the clients requested. This was produced with specialist paint & brushes to give the best finish to the lettering, both in terms of coverage, but also in terms of crisp, sharp neat edges to each letter.

The clients were so pleased with the result & had Traditional signs not only produce the hanging sign for the same premises, but also produce the signage for their other store in Clapham.

As a sign writer you critique even when the client is happy with what has been produced. This store has lighting directly above the fascia, to shine the writing at night, it can affect the signwriting.

The light can bounce too much & too brightly. This should be considered when giving a store front a make over. This was the case here as the genuine gold can shine too brightly, due to the close proximity of the trough light, which pings too much light & makes the gold almost be unseen against the pale backdrop colour. The same can occur on bright sunny days. Its just something for designers to consider if designing a client’s branding and appearnce on shop front as the reality can be quite different to the graphics designed digitally.
