Restaurant signwriting for a repeat client in West London. This client had Traditional Signs of London produce their restaurant signwriting at their premises at Abbey Road, St John’s Wood, Then contracted Traditional Signs to produce the signage at their second premises in NW10.

The Clients had the works of the new premises refubishments produced at the early part of the year in 2020. They hoped to be open by the end of March, so they ensured having the sign produced in time. However the weather decided to not play its part. Generally Traditional Signs check the weather forecasts & delay work if likely to have rain or strong winds. The clients were unable to have the work re-arranged so it was decided to proceed & hope for enough breaks in the clouds. . . . . which wasn’t many!

To speed up the process & also to ensure as acurate a sign as possible for clients, a pre prepared template is produced on paper & taken to site. The ideally sized template is then measured onto the fascia. The Fascia is measured for height & width & centre points marked out, in this instance with tape. This provides guides to enure the template is in the correct position & also upright/level. The image is then relifed to the fascia & the template is removed so the painting can be produced.

Painting in the rain is pretty obvious to realise its not feasible. First & foremost its a health & safety concern. A wet ladder & slipping is much more likely as well as the ladder itself slipping from its resting points. Add to this the surface can’t really have the paint applied to but alos the rain dripping in a tin of oil based paint is not good. Progress was made as far as possible before the rain became too persistant. Its not ideal to rush any painting, but in this instance the pace was increased just to get as much of the main brand name on as possible. The clients decided that if at least the brand name could be painted the sub heading could be produced another time.

The rain remained very heavy & constant for several hours & it became more a case of would there be enough daylight to complete the work even if the rain relented. The clients were apologetic over not being able to cover costs of the work being produced another day. As they were repeat clients every effort was made for them including risking working the wet ladders.

The main heading branding was completed during a break in the clouds, ensuring every line of the wording was still painted as neatly & precisely as possible. Care was taken despite the pace being upped. As the weather had improved slightly, the sub-heading was also started. This too was painted at a slightly faster pace than usual, but it was felt it could be completed in time before the daylight was lost.

The remaining letters of the restaurant signwriting were completed whilst there was still some rain, but not as heavy as it had been. The marking out charcoal was cleaned off, leaving the fascia completed before darkness decended.

The clients were so pleased that Traditional Signs persisted & perservered despite the hindrances & delays. They were able to open their restaurant in time, but so unfortunately for them it was just as the first Covid pandemic lockdown was enforced.
