Property window numbers produced in 23ct gold leaf at a residence in West London. The clients had a nicely refurbished front entrance including a fresh glass panel above the newly replaced & painted front door. They requested some property window numbers to be produced in gold leaf. They chose to have a fine outline & a drop shadow in black to give the numbers some definition. A visual was provded so they could see how it would look prior to being produced & several letter types (fonts) were also offered, those which would be in keeping with the age of the property.

The first job once on site is to use the drawn nmbers, which are made to several sizes, & then the best suited can be chosen.  They are taped to the inside of the window, so the numbers can be drawn on the outside of the window in a white marking out pencil.

.

.

The marking out is all that remains on the window. The paper drawings are removed so that the property window numbers can be started, which is produced on the inside of the window pane.

.

.

The paint is applied to create the property window numbers using a specialist signwriting pure hair chisel edge brush. this helps to create the crisp neat lines. The paint is a specialist fast drying paint, better suited for this sort of job that just oil based enamels.

.

.

Whilst the black outlines & shadows dry, the marking out on the ouside of the window is cleaned off, as that is no longer required. Once the black is all dried a specialist glue called size is brush applied to the property window numbers. This has to be brushed on using the specialist signwriting brushes to get a nice consistant covering of size across all the number centres. This then has to be given time to dry to a just still tacky consistancy, which is when the gold leaf is then applied.

.

.

The 23ct gold leaf is carefully applied smoothly from the sheets it comes applied to.  This is done a little like water slide decals or childrens fake tattoos.  The trick is to apply the gold as consistantly & smoothly as possible. Then to lay extra over areas that either may not be covered that well or that may have cracks/splits in the gold.

.

.

At this point it doesn’t look overly neat from the outside, due to the excess of gold going over the edges of the numbers, but this is to ensure all the gold areas are well covered. The gold is allowed to fully dry & harden to the size which is quite quick drying, especially in warm weather.

Once fully dry the excess gold is then ‘burnished’ cleaned off the numbers. this is done with a different specialist very soft hair brush. This stops the gold that remains on the numbers being scratched.

.

.

With the excess gold cleaned off, the final process is to protect the propery window numbers by applying a coat of varnish, covering the numbers. This is a fast drying varnish, & once fully dry it hardens & traps the gold & paint to the window & is then protected so the window can be cleaned without affecting the numbers.

The completed property window numbers now shimmering bright in genuine 23 carat gold with a nice sharp neat outlining with shadow.
