Hanging shop sign produced for Wine Merchants Philglas & Swiggot in Marylebone, West London. Traditional Signs of London were requested to add signwriting to a supplied hanging sign, which the clients had re-painted but wished for their branding to be added with sign writing & gold leaf gilding.

.

The artwork is sized to the required dimentions of the panel, then produced on paper & this is used as a template for the signwriting on both sides of the board. So the artwork is measured into place & reliefed twice. Once for each side. Once the image is on the panel the sign writing can be produced.

Unfortunately the clients had provided a panel, which had been freshly painted, but it was prepared & painted with the wrong types of paint. The undercoat had applied well but the paint used for the base colour was applied with only a thin coat & also didn’t cure to the undercoat. This may have been dure to a interior water based paint being used instead of a durable external paint.

It meant that the paint that had been applied came off easily. So when trying to use a very low tack tape to create a straight edge, the topcoat paint came away with the tape. This only occurs with poor preparation.

Traditional signs overcame the issue by touching up these areas after continuing & completing the sign writing, using the clients base colour paints. Not ideal but problem overcome.

These are just some unforseen issues sign writers can come up against, especially these days with so many modern paint suppliers & them offering every shade of colour. With paint its about prep & application just as much as it is pretty colour. This is often overlooked or skipped by budget shop re-furb companies. This in turn leaves a problem for a sign writer, which wouldn’t otherwise be their issue.

The 23ct genuine gold was applied to the ‘And’ as well as the two decorative lines. As can be seen the poor prep meant the base colour lifted from the panel when removing the guide tape. Only one side of the hanging shop sign had this issue, as the other no tape was used. Its not essential to use tape, just assists in being neater & also can speed up the process. The opposing side was painted & gilded without any tape assistance. Therefore without the issue.

The finished product was some crisp precise signwriting produced in the desired paint colour & 23ct gold leaf for the clients, as desired. They were very pleassed with the outcome & the rectifying of the issue on their behalf. As a litlle finishing touch the handles were also repainted in the matching colour of the brand name, which made for a smarter look.

The gold leaf shines bright as it does with genuine gold. The colours looked professional & smart, so a job well done, despite the hindrance. The sign is now hanging in its unique position of a diamond, rather than a square, which is tradition for the street the premises is located in Marylebone.
