Internal sign writing produced for an established Vegetable produce wholesalers who were setting up an eatery and retail outlet in West London.

They were looking to have fresh branding and logos produced by sign writing onto their polished wall tiles and black board wall areas.

The artwork was produced by their own graphic design contractor, so the initial part of the project was to take the digital design & produce the artwork on paper for use as a template once on site.

The artwork for all the internal sign writing is then produced on paper to scale, which is taken to site and used as templates.

Once on site the artworks are measured into place.

It’s important to ensure all of the artworks are level, equally spaced and in the ideal locations for the overall visual appeal.

Internal sign writing can vary a lot depending on the size of the walls, pillars, doors, etc as well as the surface textures to be painted on to.

The artwork is reliefed onto the polished wall tiling using charcoal, so that its easily removed but can also be seen as a guide to paint to.

Care has to be taken not to rub the markings off as the charcoal is very easily removed from a polished tile. If that does occur then a wax pencil is required to mark out the artwork.

There was little time on this project to allow for process shots, as the pressure was on to get the internal sign writing produced swiftly to allow for other tradesment to fit out the rest of the counter area and surrounding displays.

A special mix of fast drying paint was used. The fast drying enabled the sign to also have a covering of clear varnish once dry to protect the sign from any scratching once the store was open & trading.

This was also hand painted over each letter, rather than coated over all the tiles.

The sign is produced by hand using specialist sign writer quill brushes. Both when painting the black lettering with the specialist fast dry paint and also when painting on the covering clear varnish.

The other internal sign writing was produced inbetween the coats of black paint & varnish on the tiled wall.

This allowed for dry time of the black paint. The other sign was to be produced in a single colour, this time white.

The wall is already painted in a masonry black to be like a blackboard/chalkboard. So the writing was to be added to look like its was chalk, but actually to be non wipeable, as it was the main heading & logo.

Again due to time restraint there is no process shots, but some of the completed signwriting.

The logo and heading was actually on quite a small scale so took some precision painting using a specialist sign writing brush.

Once written though it could dry & was then ready to go for their needs as a menu/price list.
