Hand painted signs come in so many varied forms. One that is very traditional is hand painting signs on framed panels. Be it amenity panels, which fix to a wall of a restaurant or pub, or a hanging panel, which is bracketed to a retail outlet storefront.

What often needs to be taken into account when looking into having something like this produced, is the materials cost & production before the signs are crafted. Its often overlooked that machine made & printed signage on panels is more cost efficient, but this is due to a bespoke manufactured & painted panel being far more labour intensive.

What you get for spending out on a bespoke sign is unique creative appeal, that printed & vinyl signage just can’t offer.

Signwriters are up against a competitive market with this type of signage & can’t compete in terms of costs in production. The alternatives will be that the bespoke signs will end up having to be made in more cost effective materials, but for that you lose in durability. Panel signs which have framing, mean having a panel, made in wood (cost dependant on the type of wood, ie hardwood, softwood, etc) The frames have to be mitred & pinned in place, as well as the panels requiring a durable waterproof primer, undercoat & top coat, as well as possibly a varnish. Only then can the signage be added for a durable lasting result.

The panel was produced in wood, framed & then given the primer, undercoat & topcoat as mentioned. The layout for the design was produced on paper & then reliefed onto the panel, one side at a time. the design was produced by Traditional Signs as well as drawn out. So as explained, it can be quite labour intensive producing this type of bespoke, crafted work.

The reliefed image gives a guide of where & how to produce the hand painted signs using specialist brushes & paints.

The signwriting is produced by using the specialist brush shape to create serifs on the letters, along with straight, crisp edges to each letter. The artwork is built up in layers, with the base colour/s painted first & then the shading added by ‘wet blending’.

The production of the hand painted signs is assisted by having tape along the top & base line of the lettering. This assists in creating crisp neat serifs to the letters & also speeds up the process, without having to hand paint every stroke. It never looks tidy mid process, but once completed it looks very smart & sharp.

The signwriting is doubled up by producing on the flip side of the panel, as this type of signage is a hanging/projecting sign, so to be seen both sides. Its not vital the signage is 100% matching, as both sides will not be seen at once, but its important to get them to look as matching as possible.

The final stage is to clear coat varnish the whole panel on both sides to assist with durability in the outdoor weather. This panel was also given metal eyelets added to the top of the panel, so the clients could hang the sign onto their bracket. They were overjoyed with the result & knew that this sort of bespoke work takes time, dedication & skill.
