Pillar numbers by a signwriter are generally the street address & either just the numbers or with the street address as well. This project required a pair of numbers with them to be signwritten onto each pillar of the premises. The pillar numbers to be matching in letter type (font) size, position & colour.
.
Unfortunately with this type of work its quite common to see building contactors & similar type renovators of these period listed & conservation areas to overlook the presentation of the pillar numbers & call in someone cheaper but with less ability or knowledge to produce them
.
.
When property in London is so costly & also representing many businesses or even countries, like on this occasion, the entrance pillar numbers should be of high quality & reflect the cost of the property as well as be correct to the historical period in line with the conservation requirements.
.
Traditional Signs of London prides itself on providing a high quality & accurate signwriting which is not only neatly produced, but is also correct to the historical features of a high end property within London. The clients this project was produced with were in full agreement with this & why this project was a repeat job from the same clients. A professional & image concious building contractor will bring a high end finish to a property, including the signwriting being of a professional & skilled standard.
.
This particualar project was to add pillar numbers to the front entrance to the Serbian Embassy, which you would expect to have a professional & high end appeal to the front of their property.
.
.
The signwriting is started by measuring the ideal height for the numbers to be painted at on each pillar. This is then marked along with where is the centre of the pillar face, to ensure the numbers are correctly positioned & straight. Once measured the numbers are reliefed onto the pillars by using a pre prepared drawing on paper, which is traced onto the masonry.
.
.
The numbers have to painted with time taken & care to create sharp crisp edges to each numeral. The strokes with the brush are slow & careful, especially if the pillar surface is stippled & not smooth. Excess paint on the brush would lead to bleeding. The brush used is a specialist signwriter brush which is made from pure animal hairs.
.
.
The right hand side pillar painted & all marking out cleaned off. The same process is then repeated on the one on the left hand side of the portico entrance.
.
.
The left hand side pillar also completed & the marking out also wiped clean once the paint has dried, to complete the project.
.
.
The completed job taken from the street. A smart sleek painting of pillar numbers suitable for the area of London & period the property was built.
