House numbers painted on period building in Kensington by Traditional Signs of London.

The clients came with a typeface already required for this premises. The neighbouring property had the same typeface & the brief was to replace the previous numbers, which was felt was a poor choice of typeface for the premises, and to match with the neighbouring typeface instead.

The first task was to identify & match the spacing of the numbers to the neighbouring typeface. The previous existing typeface was too be honest a poor choice as it was verly bold & ‘blocky’ which didn’t suit the premises at all. If anything it gave the impression of a non thought out more hmo property feel, rather than a family home in a affluent street and area.

A digital visual was produced for the clients approval before the works was agreed to. This ensures both parties understand the scope of work & what the finished product will look like prior to the work being carried out, rather than having the house numbers sketched out on site without an agreement first. This is Traditional Signs of London’s preferred method.

The main obstacle to overcome was the access to the area where the numbers were to be painted. When house numbers painted are to the left of a premises entrance steps & railings, this can pose quite awkward to reach & paint, especially for a right handed painter. Its quite uncomfortable to lean over the railings & be able to create precise neat numbers.

Artworks were drawn out in studio prior to being on site. These are used as templates to be reliefed onto the stucco so the sign writing can be neatly produced in the precise measured area. In this instance a tracing of the neighbouring premises numbers was also taken, so it could be used if required, which it was.

The house numbers painted over the railings was challenging but with care, experience & skill this was overcome. The typeface was produced neatly & with the ideal opstioning as requested. In an ideal situation a small scaffolding of some type would’ve been the better solution for access, but a mis-communication with the contractors meant this wasn’t offered or given.

The finished result had overcome the obstacle & the clients had the perfect preferred typeface hand painted in the ideal requested position & sizing.

The shed/outbuilding in the basement had a very steep inclined roof, which meant it wasn’t possible to stand on to be able to be the ideal side of the railings to paint the numbers. It was attempted but was just too steep. This meant the numbers were painted whilst leaning over the railings & due to being right handed meant it was pretty much painted upside down! It made the finished result all the more pleasing & the contractors client was overjoyed with the result, which made the efforts worthwhile.
