Textured wall signs painted by hand are advantageous in that the wording can be painted neatly, crisply & in a durable way without any blurring/bleeding that a stencil would create, either if spray painted or by brush painting.
Traditional Signs of London use a drawing, produced in studio, on paper, which is reliefed onto the wall in a charcoal or chalk. This gives a guide of where to paint, so the stencil isn’t required. The paper layout reliefed would avoid the requirement for a stencil to be pressed tightly to a surface or even stuck to the surface to try to avoid the paint bleeds

The drawing is pin pricked along each line of the lettering, which when ‘pounced’ allows the charcoal or chalk through the small holes & stick softly to the textured wall. The layout is measured into the ideal position for the wording first, before temporarily taped to the wall.

Once pounced the drawing/layout can be removed from the wall & the painting can be started. When producing textrued wall signs, its generally best to paint with a matte finish as the textured walls are generally also matte in finish.

Painting textured wall signs with a specialist brush & having a powdered line guide ensures for a much neater finish to the edges of each letter. Do to the nature of the surface its impossible to get completely neat & crisp but its still much improved over a stencil painted over.

Time is taken to ensure the lines of the lettering being painted is neat & built up by several brush strokes, rather than in 1 stroke. If need be the edges can also be touched up after creating a letter. this process requires more time on site painting rather than a stencil made sign, but the final finish is superior & worth the more labour intensive work.

The textured wall signs can be more time consuming depending on the weather. Some paints are more absorbant than others & others can have longer dry times. In this instance, due to the colour being dark on a light background only 1 coat of paint was required.

The project required the shop branding name & also street address numbers to be painted on the unusual textured wall fascia. Its more common for shop fascias to be painted onto a wood or metal panel, but in this instance it was a stippled plaster render. The textured wall signs were completed once both parts of the fascia were sign written.

The paint would last on a surface such as this as long, if not longer than the base coat on the rendered wall. The paints used when signwriting are more often than not oil based, where as the base coats tend to be water based. this technique of signwriting onto a textured wall can be cost effective for a start up company who would prefer this form of shop front rather than a panelled fascia. This method of signwriting making textured wall signs is also of much use if wishing for signage on the side wall of a building or the rear wall of a pub/restaurant garden wall.
