Signwriter wanted by an Art Gallery for their address to be written clearly & well presented on their premises entrance doors. The doors are large wooden panels which are probably of some vintage, as were the sort of doors which you would’ve expected to have seen in courtyards, railway arch lock ups, & old building warehouses.
.
The clients sent though an image of the entrance doors & some guide on what the signwriter wanted needed to produce, but a selection of colours were provided just to claify the request & the clients agreement of what would be the best looking & visually appealing for them. The doors were painted in a deep brown shade, so the question was whether to tone in the wording using a lighter shade of brown or tan, or whether is could be subtle enough using a pale shade of grey.
.
.
The visual showed the grey tone was subtle enough that the clients were happy to go with this despite the shade of brown/tan being their branding colour on their website & social media. They felt the grey offered something more subtle but also that noticed just enough.
.
.
The drawings were produced prior to being on site, with a selection of sizes. the best fitting is then chosen & relifed onto the doors by tracing it on with chalk. The top & base line of the text is taped just to ensure a sharp edge & for a bit of speed. The smallest lettering was produced first using an ideal sized specialist signwriter chisel edged quill brush. This gives the best flow of paint & keeps the paint lines as straight & neat as possible.
.
.
The groves in the wood require extra eattention to ensure all the creases are painted in but not to be painted with too much paint on the brush or it creates runs in the creases.
.
.
It could’ve been produced by painting the lettering on the flat surface first & then concentrating on the grooves, but it was prefered to produce from left to right.
.
.
All that is left to do to complete is clean off the marking out chalk, which is done with a wet wipe.
