Hand painted entrance signwriting completed for Leyden House, a Grade II listed historic property in Mortlake, London using traditional exterior lettering and specialist signwriting paints. The bespoke entrance lettering was carefully positioned within the narrow architectural space between the entrance door and ornate fanlight to create a refined and understated period finish.
Project Brief
The project involved hand painted entrance lettering for Leyden House on Thames Bank in Mortlake, a historically significant riverside property believed to date back to the late 15th century.

The building combines Tudor origins with an 18th-century façade and remains one of the oldest surviving domestic properties in the area.

The client requested understated architectural lettering sympathetic to the age and historic character of the property rather than prominent modern signage. The house name was therefore produced in a fine Roman serif typeface carefully scaled to suit the narrow proportions of the entrance framework positioned between the door and decorative fanlight glazing.

Particular attention was required throughout the planning and layout stage to refine spacing, alignment, negative space, and overall visual balance within the restricted architectural setting.
Traditional Entrance Lettering
The entrance lettering was painted entirely by hand using traditional signwriting brushes and specialist exterior paints selected for durability, opacity, and crisp edge definition.
Careful consideration was given to proportion, spacing, stroke balance, and restraint to ensure the finished lettering integrated naturally within the historic entrance detailing without visually dominating the surrounding architecture.

The fine Roman serif typeface and subtle layout allowed the signwriting to remain elegant, legible, and architecturally sympathetic to the listed riverside property.
Finished Architectural Signwriting
The completed hand painted entrance lettering enhances the identity and presentation of the historic property while remaining understated within the surrounding period architecture.
