Internal Wayfinding Signwriting at Chelsea Old Town Hall

Traditional Signs Of London was commissioned directly by the Kensington and Chelsea Register Office to produce internal wayfinding signwriting across a series of oak doors at Chelsea Old Town Hall on King’s Road, London.

The project replaced existing door plaques with more refined permanent lettering, surface gilded directly onto the dark French-polished timber using genuine 23ct gold leaf.

Gilded Room Names and Internal Wayfinding

Approximately 12 doors required permanent room identification and wayfinding, including the ceremonial Harrington Room, Rossetti Room and Brydon Room, alongside numbered rooms, W.C., Staff Only and Exit Only lettering.

Traditional Signs Of London carried out a site survey to measure each door and establish the appropriate size and positioning of every inscription.

Individual full-size artworks were then prepared using a fine cursive italic script, creating a consistent scheme while accommodating variations in the doors and glazed panels.

Preparing the Oak Doors for Permanent Lettering

Several doors retained existing nameplates that needed to be removed before the new lettering could be introduced. Their removal and the subsequent making good of the timber were coordinated in advance, allowing a specialist French polisher to restore the affected areas before the gilding commenced.

This preparation allowed the new lettering to sit directly on the finished oak rather than relying on additional plaques or manufactured signs.

23ct Gold Leaf Signwriting on Oak Doors

Each artwork was accurately positioned and centred before being transferred onto the door using a traditional pounce pattern.

Gilding size was applied by specialist brushwork and allowed to reach the correct tack before genuine 23ct transfer gold leaf was laid onto the lettering.

The gold was then carefully burnished and cleaned to reveal the finished script.

Against the dark French-polished oak, the surface gilding provided clear room identification with a refined finish sympathetic to the surrounding interior.

Internal Wayfinding for a Historic London Interior

The on-site work was completed over approximately two days and scheduled around the Register Office to avoid disruption to ceremonies.

The finished internal wayfinding signwriting created a consistent and permanent identification scheme throughout the interior while complementing the character of the existing oak doors.
