Traditional Entrance Numbering for Historic Mansion Blocks

Entrance numbering was commissioned by Paint Connect Ltd as part of the refurbishment of Lumley Buildings near Sloane Square. Working alongside the decorating contractor, the project involved producing traditional serif numerals for eight separate entrances, each hand painted within recessed masonry roundels set above the original timber entrance doors.

As part of the wider refurbishment programme, the entrance numbering was designed to complement the Victorian character of the buildings. Rather than using a modern typeface, a period-appropriate serif style was selected to sit comfortably within the original masonry detailing and enhance the restored entrances.

Traditional Entrance Numbering on Masonry Roundels

Each recessed masonry roundel was individually measured before the numerals were drawn, balanced and hand painted using traditional signwriting techniques. The entrance numbers were carefully designed to sit within the recessed masonry roundels positioned centrally above each round-headed entrance arch, ensuring the serif numerals complemented the restored render, original timber entrance doors and decorative wrought iron bracket lanterns.

Working in collaboration with Paint Connect Ltd, the entrance numbering formed one of the final stages of the refurbishment works. Accurate setting out across all eight entrances ensured a consistent appearance throughout the development while respecting the Victorian character and architectural detailing of the buildings.

Traditional Signwriting for Refurbishment Projects

Painting directly onto masonry requires careful preparation, accurate layout and traditional brushwork. Matching the serif numerals to the period of the buildings created an authentic finish that complements the original Victorian architecture while providing clear and durable entrance identification.

Completed as part of the refurbishment works, the finished entrance numbering provides a sympathetic finishing detail across all eight entrances while preserving the historic character of Lumley Buildings.
