Brick Wall Signwriting for a Commercial Interior in Soho

Traditional Signs Of London was commissioned to produce brick wall signwriting for Comptoir Gourmand during the fit-out of its former premises near Soho Square, London.

White business signwriting painted onto exposed Victorian brickwork in a Soho commercial interior.

Working with the business owner and design team, the project involved reproducing the company’s established branding directly onto an exposed brick wall within the patisserie.

Signwriting for a Commercial Fit-Out

The company name and branding were supplied by the client and needed to be reproduced accurately at approximately two metres wide. Digital visuals were prepared before work commenced, allowing the scale, positioning and colour to be assessed within the interior.

The initial brief considered brown or burgundy lettering. However, the original Victorian brickwork was relatively dark and varied considerably in colour and texture.

Traditional Signs Of London recommended changing the lettering to white to provide considerably better contrast and legibility while retaining the character of the exposed brick. Visuals demonstrated the alternative before the final colour was approved.

Painting Business Branding onto Brickwork

Once the design and positioning had been agreed, a full-size pounced paper template was prepared to accurately transfer the supplied branding onto the irregular brick surface.

The lettering was then brush painted directly onto the brickwork using specialist signwriting brushes and a matt-finish oil-based signwriting enamel.

Working across the uneven surface required the lettering to follow the natural texture, mortar joints and imperfections of the original brick while maintaining the proportions and character of the company’s established identity.

Access presented an additional challenge, with the wall positioned above an open staircase leading to the basement during the ongoing interior fit-out.

Completed Brick Wall Signwriting

The finished white lettering created a strong but sympathetic contrast against the dark exposed brick, making the branding clearly legible while retaining the character of the interior.
