Hand painted property numbers completed for neighbouring residential entrances in Notting Hill using traditional exterior lettering and specialist signwriting paints. The project combined formal entrance pillar numbering together with bespoke painted gate pier lettering designed to improve and unify the presentation of the adjoining properties.
Project Brief
The project involved hand painted exterior numbering for adjoining entrances near Ladbroke Grove in Notting Hill. The principal entrance at No.79 featured a pair of rendered portico entrance piers, while the neighbouring lower ground entrance at No.79A incorporated a painted brick gate pier requiring a more bespoke solution to improve previously poorly executed numbering applied directly onto the brickwork.
A traditional Roman serif typeface was selected for the main entrance numbering to complement the proportions and architectural character of the period properties. To visually connect both entrances, the basement gate pier lettering was produced in the same typeface using a hand painted scalloped faux plaque design applied directly onto the painted brick surface.
Traditional Exterior Numbering
The numbering and faux plaque detailing were painted entirely by hand using traditional signwriting brushes and specialist exterior paints selected for durability, opacity, and crisp edge definition across both rendered masonry and painted brick surfaces.
Particular attention was given to spacing, alignment, proportion, and visual consistency to ensure the separate entrances remained architecturally connected while responding appropriately to their differing surfaces and positions within the streetscape.
Finished Residential Signwriting
The completed hand painted numbering enhances the presentation, clarity, and architectural cohesion of both entrances while remaining sympathetic to the surrounding period properties and residential setting.
Traditional residential signwriting, hand painted property numbers, and exterior architectural lettering undertaken for London homes, entrance piers, brickwork, and period properties throughout London and surrounding counties by commission.
The painted faux plaque provided a cleaner and more refined solution for the lower entrance while avoiding the need for applied signage or replacement masonry work.
