Project Brief

The project involved hand painted house name lettering for a historic cottage located on Gentleman’s Row in Enfield Chase, an area known for its distinguished period properties and architectural character. Believed to date back to the 15th century, the cottage featured irregular historic construction, low carved oak entrance surrounds, and non-linear architectural surfaces typical of early timber-framed properties.

The client requested a traditional style of exterior lettering sympathetic to the age and proportions of the building rather than modern or visually dominant signage. A fine Roman serif typeface was therefore selected and painted in an off-white tone to sit naturally within the historic setting and surrounding materials.

Traditional House Name Lettering

The house name was painted entirely by hand using traditional signwriting brushes and specialist exterior paints selected for durability, opacity, and crisp edge definition.

Owing to the age and historic construction of the cottage, many of the architectural lines and surfaces remained naturally irregular, requiring the layout, spacing, and positioning to be visually balanced by eye and experience rather than measured from perfectly straight reference points.

Particular attention was given to spacing, stroke balance, proportion, and tonal restraint to ensure the finished lettering remained sympathetic to the carved oak entrance detailing and historic character of the property.
