Traditional Signs Of London was commissioned by a building contractor to reinstate the entrance pillar numbers at the Embassy of Serbia in Belgravia, London.

Occupying part of the prestigious Grade I listed terrace at Belgrave Square, the project required the existing numbering to be faithfully reproduced, maintaining the established appearance of the entrance while complementing the character of this important historic building.

Project Brief

The commission involved repainting the entrance numbers on a pair of white masonry portico pillars using the original style, size and positioning.

As the numbers already formed part of the building’s identity, the objective was not to redesign them but to accurately reproduce the existing lettering using traditional signwriting techniques.

Careful attention was given to matching the proportions and spacing so the reinstated numbers blended seamlessly with the property’s historic appearance.

Reinstating the Entrance Pillar Numbers

Traditional signwriting is often required where existing lettering needs to be preserved rather than replaced with a new design.

For this project, the original number style was carefully matched before being painted by hand using specialist signwriting enamel in a durable gloss black finish.

Working directly onto painted masonry required accurate brush control to achieve crisp edges and an even finish while maintaining consistency across both entrance pillars.

Although the design itself remained unchanged, reproducing existing lettering by hand requires careful observation and precision to ensure the finished work appears authentic and in keeping with the surrounding architecture.

Completed Entrance Pillar Numbers

The completed entrance pillar numbers restore a smart and well-defined appearance to the embassy entrance while respecting the historic character of this Grade I listed property.

By matching the existing style and proportions, the new lettering integrates naturally with the building, providing a durable finish appropriate for one of London’s most distinguished diplomatic addresses.
