Property Signwriting Kensington – Painted House Number
Traditional Signs Of London was commissioned directly by a homeowner to produce property signwriting in Kensington for a substantial three-storey mews-style residence.
The project required the house number to be traditionally painted onto the textured rendered lintel above the entrance, creating a permanent architectural detail suited to the character of the property and its cobbled London setting.

Designing the House Number
The available space was relatively shallow and positioned between two traditional wall lanterns, making proportion and placement particularly important.
Artwork was prepared to establish an appropriate scale and consider whether the entrance should display simply “43” or include “No.” to create a more balanced period-style inscription.
The completed No.43 used a traditional Roman serif typeface, carefully sized and centred to provide sufficient presence without overpowering the entrance.

Signwriting on Textured Render
Unlike painting onto a perfectly smooth panel, producing precise lettering on stippled render requires considerably more control. The irregular surface prevents a signwriting brush from travelling as freely as it would across smooth masonry, timber or glass.
Full-size artwork was prepared on paper before being pounced and transferred onto the lintel, providing an accurate guide for the positioning and proportions of the lettering.
Traditional Brush-Painted Lettering
The number was painted by hand using specialist brushes and black oil-based signwriting enamel, with the finish reduced to complement the appearance of the surrounding painted render.

Maintaining crisp Roman serif forms across a heavily textured surface is time-consuming, requiring individual brush strokes to follow the uneven substrate while retaining clean edges, consistent weight and accurately formed characters.
Completed Property Signwriting in Kensington
The finished lettering provides a restrained but clearly visible identification feature above the entrance, with the traditional typography complementing the brickwork, rendered detailing and period character of the surrounding mews setting.
Traditional Signs Of London provides property signwriting, painted house numbers and bespoke residential lettering throughout Kensington, London and surrounding areas.
