Pillar number painting on a residence in Chelsea, West London by Traditional Signs of London.

The small project came via the property owner, who contracted Traditional Signs of London for this specialist work.

The client wishing that the pillar number painting is finished to an exacting standard, which is exactly what Traditional Signs of London aim to achieve for the clients.

As always a visual is prepared & shown to the clients so both parties are in agreement, before the on site section of the project is completed.

This offers the typeface to be used, as well as it’s size & placement on the pillar.

The visual aided the client in defining their desires for the style of pillar number painting.

They suggested a Bodoni typeface, & several thicknesses of Bodoni were offered. The client revised and wished for the thin strokes of the numbers to be super fine and elegant.

The client was more than happy with the selection once revised. The artworks were produced on paper prior to travelling to site. The most ideal size of artwork that fits the pillar is then selected.

Adjustments were required on site, having shown the client which artwork was to be used.

The request was for the typeface to be more slender than drawn, so the adjustments to this were made on site.

The client is then shown, so can be in full agreement.

The adjusted template is then measured onto the pillar. The client changed their mind on the height placement, which proved a slight issue, as the pillar is tapered, so thinner at the placement height desired.

To combat this, the artwork was altered moving the two digits closer together.

In graphic design this is called kerning.

When produced manually it is a case of cutting/tearing the artwork in two, moving the pieces closer together & taping together again.

The pillar number painting is able to be produced, once the artwork is measured precisely into place and traced off.

The numbers are painted using a specialist sign writing brush, by hand using sign writer expertise.

These numbers are not 1 stroke lettering, they are created with a series of strokes to create the letter & ensuring a precise edge all the way round each number.

More care is taken & precison is required if being produced on an uneven or stipple finish masonry.

In this instance it was a little bit of a stretch to reach & paint, due to the railings in place.

Its makes for precise paintwork a little more challenging, but is overcome with care & skill.

The completed pillar number painting then has any of the guide markings & traced off artwork removed with a damp cloth.

It leaves the area of the pillar pristine, just as it was prior to the pillar number painting.
