Painted property numbers on a residence in Kensington by specialist Traditional Signs of London.

The clients wished for a number within a roundel on a subtle scale. They have an external lamp & wished for the roundel to be approximately the width of the lamp in diameter.

A visual was offered with a suggested in keeping & subtle typeface that wasn’t overbearing or bold.

The positioning & sizing of the roundel was suggested & the clients approved the sizing but wished for the positioning to be closer to the lap, as they felt the lamp wouldn’t illuminate the number in the position offered, even though its position was more asthetically pleasing.

The artwork was produced in several sizes & taken to site. The most acurate & closely matched to the lamp width was chosen in agreement with the client, was was the placement with the client having the casting vote, as ultimately its their premises & what they would like.

Traditional Signs of London just offer a professional opinion based on knowledge & expertise, where as the client has the property & its more about their wishes over a sign writer’s opinion.

The artwork is reliefed onto the wall in the ideal location, measured into place ensuring its upright & level. The sign writing is then started with a specialist sign writer brush. The numbers are created with several strokes rather than a single stroke as many assume its how its painted, but to produce neat professional painted property numbers, then more care, skill & knowledge is required.

Once the numbers have been completed, its then the task of painting the fine line roundel. A smaller brush is used for this, as its a specialist brush with slightly longer hairs than a lettering brush. The skill & experience is to load the brush with the correct amount & consitsnacy of paint to create a good flow off the brush to create a neat continuous curve. The knowledge of whare to start , stop & join the curves to create a completed roundel takes time to learn & master. Especially on a rough surface, such as brickwork, like with this project.

The final remaining work is to clean off the area from any marks created when reliefing the image onto the brickwork. This is just a case of a wet rag to remove excess charcoal or pencil, which comes away quite easily without much contact required.
