Signs painted by Traditional Signs of London in Hampstead for an Architectual & Interior design company’s studio.

The client had a branding & logo, with sub text ready designed. They were a little onsure on layout & sizing so requested Traditional Signs of London’s assistance with this. Several artworks of differing sizes were produced & taken to site for the clients to decide which would be most suitable for the size of their fascia.

Its good to give options that are organised in advanced, rather than try to alter adhock on site with sketching & re-sketching onto the fascia.

The visual was given a revision, as the clients initally offered the sizng of the lettering in the image above, but was decided after suggestions by Traditional Signs of London, that the lettering should be reduced in size for both the logo branding & sub text. Despite the signs painted being smaller than the initial visual it looked better spaced for the fascia & made the inital visual signage appear oversized.

The clients supplied a vector file of their logo branding & also a TTF file (font) for their branding typeface to be digitally re-scaled & artwork to be made.

The artworks once chosen by the client, after offering them up into position, so they could see which sizing suited the space best, were measured precisely into place by ensuring the centre lines of the fascia & those drawn on the artworks aligned. The artwork is then reliefed onto the surface using a chalk

A specialist sign writing brush is then used to produce the lettering, produced on letter at a time.

The painted signs are given a 2nd coat of paint if required to make fully opaque. In this instance it was only the logo & brand name that required a second coat. The sub text was written small enough with a thin set typeface that the coverage looked adequate from the pavement.

As the signs painted is an oil based paint, its able to have a wet wipe or soft wet sponge used to clear away any residue chalk & pencil marks, such as the centre lines & wording outline guides.

The sub text lettering was able to be painted as a one stroke, which made for labour intesivity a little eased. Skill is required to be able to produce this and also a specialist brush with specialist paint, so its not as simple as it would appear. Care is taken to ensure every letter is painted as neat & precisely as possible.

Unfortunately on this project I was pushed for time & wasn’t able to take process shots of the paint application.

The clients were still unsure of other signage to be added. They had initially designed for contact details to be added on the windows. They originally though a gold, silver or copper leaf. The sizing & placement was undecided, so it was felt better to leave for another day until the clients had a defined decision on it.

When returning to the premises, with the descision made, again a pair of sizes were offered as the clients were still slightly undecided. They were decided upon placement, which was now to be left justified in the bottom leaft corner of the fascia rather than on the glass.

The artworks were reliefed onto the fascia, once measured precisely into place. The signs painted again using a specialist brush and with single stroke lettering.

The clients were very happy with the result and appreciated the patience in allowing them to adjust their signage, ensuring a professional, smart & much more in keeping signage for their studio, which Traditional Signs of London asssisted in designing, as a Sign Writer can bring more experience and knowledge to provide a better outcome than clients originally antisipated.
