Retail signwriting is a staple of a signwrter’s business & this is due to so many businesses having a need or preference for a traditional style of shop fascia, which isn’t plastic or illuminated. They tend to be a wooden fascia panel & then hand painted. The typefaces may be contemporary but the method of application is traditional.

With retail signwriting its important to get the look right & agreed with the client before painting on site. So its always produced using a measured to size drawing, which is produced in studio first. This is then taken to site, positioned into place & then reliefed onto the fascia panel. this enables the signwriter to have a guide for painting & enusures, as mentioned the wording is at the agreed sizing & positioning.

When retail signwriting, it is important when using a pale colour lettering on a dark background colour that there are no visible brushstrokes & that the lettering is fully opaque. So its always given a 2nd coat over each letter to ensure better coverage. On warm days this proves a quicker & easier job than in cold or damp days, due to the dry time of the first coat of paint.

On this occasion the weather was incredibly warm, so the paint dried very fast & was able to double coat quickly, infact almost instantly! The main wording was produced first & given both coats of paint, before moving to the other side of the shop front. this was just to allow for less moving & climbing of the ladder on a hot day.

.
the street numbering on the shop front was the only other signage required with this retail signwriting job. The clients were more than happy with the resuult & pleased it was produced in paint rather than vinyl, which they feared would peel.
