Painted property numbers bespoke hand painted on entrance masonry piers for a Georgian residence in Kensington by Traditional Signs of London.

The client had previously had the painted property numbers produced on the masonry piers flanking the grand entrance steps as apposed to the kerbside entrance gate. the request was for the numbers to be reproduced in a matching typeface but with a more professional & neat finish.

The work came through a building maintenance firm who had previously contracted Traditional Signs of London for this specialist work. They were ensuring that the painted property numbers were finished to an exacting standard that the residence deserves, which is exactly what Traditional Signs of London aim to achieve for the clients.

The existing numbers weren’t too bad but Traditional Signs of London felt the numbers needed more spacing between them as the existing were painted too close together. In graphic deign terms this is known as kerning, but sign writers just call it spacing. Painted property numbers require being seen as the object as a whole from both a distance as well as close up and then the best sizing, placement & spacing is given dependant on its situation.

To ensure everyone is in agreement with this a visual is offered the client prior to production on site. Adjustments can be made if required but its better that the client has more an idea of what the end product will look like. This is paramount to Traditional Signs of London, as client satisfaction is the main aim, as its their property. This isn’t overlooked.

The templates are taken to site having been produced on paper. The centre lines are measured & marked & ensuring the numbers will be level & upright. Then the ideal sized template is reliefed onto the pier with a powder that is able to be wiped clean after sign writing. It just acts as a guide for neat precise painting.

The first of the pair of painted property numbers completed. All lines created & executed with precision & care. These numbers are not 1 stroke lettering, they are created with a series of strokes to create the letter & ensuring a precise edge all the way round each number. More care is taken & precison is required on a uneven & stipple finish masonry piers pillars and walls.

The process is then repeated for the 2nd pier. The same template is placed & used with measured precision. Again the painted property numbers are created using skilled stroke work with specialist brushes & paint.
