Painted property name produced on a premises masonry lintle, in a typeface chosen by the client & sized to their wishes.
Its appreciated that a home and in particular a West London home should have a professional & high end finish. Both internally & externally. Great care is taken and often to great detail to make a prestigious home, which means using the best trades to produce the best quality of work throughout. This is can include having the property masonry & brickwork restored or regularly re-painted or renovated. When this is produced its better to call upon an expert sign writer to create or re-instate a property name on the exterior of the premises, whether its on the main puilding itself, a portico entrance, a gate pier or a front wall. With this project Traditional Signs were contracted to re-instate a painted property name onto a beam/lintle above the entrance door to a premises on Hampstead Heath.

Producing the painted property name started with an architect’s design on this project. They had produced the size the lettering was to be written, the typeface it was to be painted in & also the letter spacing (gaps between the letters). This meant for this project It was my job to replicate the artwork on the property itself. To do this the artwork was re-created onto paper, then taken to site & reliefed onto the surface of the property once it had been measured into the desired position according to the architect’s designs.

In order to produce the painted property name, the reliefed paper drawings are made to be visable on the masonry. Once double checked all is level & aligned, the painting can be produced. This is done using a specialist sign writer chisel edged brush, with experience choosing the best hair type for flow of paint, but also for applying to the surface the property has. Then its mixing the paint to a better consistancy & viscosity to get a really nice flow of paint from the brush to create as precise a lettering as possible. Gloss paint could be used but in this instance it would look more like a vinyl sticker with the sheen it gives, so a matte finish paint was used, which blends more to the painted finish of the masonry the property has.

Skill & care is taken to create the lettering despite the stippled finish to the masonry. This is often caused by the re-decorating of the property being with paint rollers. Paint rollers don’t tend to leave a flat finish. It depends on the type of roller & paint used. These days its more & more common to have to apply sign writing to a stippled finish masonry. Its just takes greater care & experience when producing the paint trokes, along with using the correct tool for the job, hence the choice of specialist brush & their hair type.

To the layman it may appear that anyone can do it, but its generally only considered a skill & expertise is required if attempted & a mess is made. The neighbouring property was proof of this. The sign writing was attempted by the property painters/decorators. Unfortunately they felt it would be a simple task. They actually requested I rectify it for them/their client but unfortunately they didn’t feel my skill & expertise was worthy of the costs the project demands from a specialist, so sadly, the bad signage remains in place on a property worth several million pounds.

To complete the works, the remaining letters are carefully painted one at a time & not rushed. this is key to a good piece of sign writing whether 2 words or 50 words. Once the paint has dried the chalk/pencil markings are rubbed off & the area is cleaned leaving just the sign writing on a nice clean surface.
