With such a wealth of apartments taking many forms across London, it can be very much the way now, that a bespoke property number gives a finesse & individuality to a property which would otherwise be matching all others in the block. Producing property numbers internally can be an advantage in that the weather has no influence on production. Currently however, internal property numbers tend to be less in demand, presumably due to the front doors not being able to have any form of individuality. Instead generally opted for uniformity. This building was a period mansions block, which had a vintage, possibly art nouveau lift to all the floors.

When in a building with features such as this & so well maintained, in the area of the city its in, wishes for bespoke apartment numbers is greater. Rightfully so with their residents chosing such a place as their home. The clients on this occsion had a period feature entrance with a lead patterned, milk glass window, which is very art nouveau or art deco.The clients had an orange door & wished for gilded gold leaf numbers with a black outline & shadow.

The white markings are to measure the centre of the door & then the height at which the numbers are to be set on the door.
Then a template of the typeface is reliefed onto the door. This makes the artwork visable to apply the sign writing. To create the gold leaf, an oil gilding process is produced. A substance called ‘size’ is applied with a specailist sign writing brush which is the same as painting with paint. The ‘size’ is more like a specialist fast drying glue. Once the ‘size’ has been neatly & carefully applied, its allowed to set to near dry allowing for a very slight tack.
The 23ct gold leaf is then applied gently & carefully to the ‘size’.

Skill & care is taken to create neat, straight & crisp lines with the brush to give the best finish to the painted numbers as possible. Its all about the finished product, rather than the process, but the skill level in producing the sign writing has to be considered. The outlining is produced using a black enamel paint with a specialist brush. There after the cast shadow is produced using the same paint, but with a bigger sized specialist ‘quill’ brush.

To complete the works, the marking out produced is wiped off with a damp cloth once the paint has dried.
This leaves a great looking gold number with a black detailing on a bespoke internal property door.
