London Property Signs for Chelsea Residences

We were commissioned to produce a set of hand-painted London property signs for a private residence near Chelsea Embankment. The brief was to create elegant, hand-painted address numbers and lettering that would sit comfortably within the surrounding streetscape while adding a refined, traditional finish to the building.

Project Brief & Client Requirements

The client requested large, clearly legible property numbers with the street name painted beneath and specifically asked that the typeface match the surrounding metal street signs of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea.

It was discussed during the planning stage that the borough street signs are typically set in uppercase lettering. Alternative options were outlined, including more traditional uppercase serif styles commonly used for residential signage.

The client chose to proceed with lowercase lettering while retaining the same street-sign typeface, resulting in a distinctive and highly individual appearance.

Digital visuals were prepared and approved in advance, allowing the client to review layout, spacing, and proportions prior to work commencing on site.

Typeface Selection & Layout

The requested council street-sign typeface was carefully recreated for hand-painted application. Particular attention was paid to stroke weight, spacing, and balance to ensure clarity when viewed from street level.

Following client feedback, minor refinements were made to the layout, resulting in a well-balanced and understated composition that reflects the visual language of the surrounding area while remaining legible and elegant.

.

Traditional Hand-Painted Signwriting Process

Once the design was approved, full-size templates were produced and carefully positioned on site. The lettering and numbers were then hand painted directly onto the masonry using specialist signwriting brushes.

Each element was built up gradually to achieve clean edges, consistent stroke weight, and a durable finish suitable for exterior conditions.

Finished London Property Signs

After final detailing and clean-up, the completed hand-painted property signs became a subtle yet distinctive feature of the building’s entrance. The finished work complements the architecture and surrounding streetscape, adding character while remaining sympathetic to the area.
